Literature Text

Last night I had a dream
That my brother wanted to play pirates
With me.
His condition was that I must look like a boy,

So I pulled back my long-wild hair
and put it in a braid
To hide behind myself.

He then took a stapler
And ran it down my spine
To make sure my hair would stay where it belonged.

I spent the rest of my life // Slowly
Pulling the small,
Sharp,
Bent,
Pieces of metal from my back.
This probably still needs a little refining, but if I didn't finish it now then I probably never would.

My back hurts just thinking about this.

Categorized as spoken word because that's how I intend for it to be read. It was also the style in my mind that has been a part of my inspiration lately.

I'd like to comment on the issue of gender-identity in this poem. First the speaker must 'look like a boy', but then does so by wearing a braid; I used this to highlight the often conflicting societal cues when it comes to gender and how one 'should behave'. I hope it was clear enough =/.
